Ambient SoC Initiative

The 21st century is said to be the era of Ambient Information Society wherein anyone is expected to enjoy a secure, comfortable and prosperous life, anywhere, anytime using high-level information technology. Against this background, the innovation of information and communication infrastructure is an urgent task required for the realization of such a society. Hence it is indispensable to develop innovative materials and devices as well as the SoC technology for the integration of high performance hardware and highly functional software combined together as electronic devices having Very-Large Scale IC as their core. For the development of such technology, an academic institute will be needed to provide the information services for the devices, hardware and software that are ultra-low power consuming, smaller in size, and highly reliable while highly functional and performing, and also socially secure, friendly to any user and to be compatible with the global environment. This "Ambient SoC Initiative", is aiming at becoming a top-level Center of Excellence in the world for integrating the hardware technology fully utilizing Nanotechnology (NT) for development of new materials and processes including device manufacturing with the Information and Communication Infrastructure software (IT) creating advanced information services by means of Ambient Technology (AT) providing an information environment user-friendly to anyone, and thus integrating these technologies onto a chip with what is termed as SoC (Sensor, Software and Service on Chip) Technology.

About the speaker:

Satoshi Goto was born on January 3rd, 1945 in Hiroshima, Japan. He received the B.E. degree and the M.E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Waseda University in 1968 and 1970, respectively. He also received the Dr. of Engineering from the same university in 1981. He joined Central Research Laboratories of NEC in 1970 and worked for NEC for 31 years until 2002. He was General Manager of C&C Media Research Laboratories and Vice President in charge of computer, software and networking research. After leaving NEC in 2002, he became Chief Executive of Kitakyushu Foundation for the Advancement of Industry, Science and Technology. He became Professor at Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems at Waseda University, Kitakyushu in April, 2003.

In research, Dr. Goto worked on Computer Aided Design for VLSI, artificial intelligence approach to VLSI design and combinatorial optimization methods for large scale problems. He is coauthor and author of over 80 papers in VLSI design and computer aided design. He also has edited and co-edited 7 books. His contributions in computer aided design includes design automation system for Gate-Array layout design, artificial intelligence approach to VLSI design and combinatorial optimization for VLSI placement problem.

Dr. Goto's current research interest is system LSI design methodology and new design tools for multimedia processing, networking functions with security or cryptography for the Next Generation Internet or Super Internet.
