The Age of Smart Machines: A New Definition for the IoT
Tuesday, 11 October 2016 at 14:50
"Smart" refers to the translation of data into insight and action, to help improve our lives. The technologies involved range from new sensors and smart devices, to analytics and machine learning, to new cloud architectures to process the data, to help us with global challenges in health, transportation, environment, etc.
About the speaker:
Luc Julia is Vice President of Innovation at the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center. Dr. Julia is spearheading the vision and development of SAMI (Samsung Architecture for Multimodal Interactions), an open and agnostic cloud‐based data ecosystem. He was recently named one of the top 100 most influential French developers in the digital world. Previously, Dr. Julia directed Siri, Apple’s personal voice assistant, and was chief technologist at Hewlett-Packard, where he led a worldwide team of 200 architects and developers. He has cofounded a number of companies, including ORB Networks, where he invented “place shifting” for the remote, ubiquitous streaming of multimedia assets. He began his career at SRI International, where he founded the Computer Human Interaction Center and was involved in development of the first smart refrigerator and car, as well as the creation of Nuance Communications, now the world leader in speech recognition. Dr. Luc Julia holds a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics and computer science from the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris and earned a Ph.D. in computer science at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications de Paris.
