Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic
The Symposium on Emerging Trends in Computing will take place at the Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic in Montreux, Switzerland. The Grand Hotel is located just across from the railway station in the heart of Montreux. It was built in 1870 in a “Belle Epoque” style by Eugène Jost and was entirely renovated in 2010. The symposium sessions will take place in the "4 Saisons" ball room of the hotel.
Things to do, places to visit:
CGN Boat Excursions:
Pleasure cruise boat excursions on Lake Geneva’s CGN boats offer one of the best ways to explore the beauty of the Lac Léman region in western Switzerland. In spring and autumn sightseeing pleasure cruises are available every day in addition to the regular passenger ferry boats crossing the lake to connect Swiss and French cities. Geneva, Nyon, Lausanne, and Vevey are good cities to depart on boat cruises with many boats also passing the Lavaux area and calling at Montreux and Chillon. Lunch and dinner cruises are popular and may require advance reservations. Historic paddle steamers are used on some routes.
Chillon Castle:
An extraordinary fortified medieval castle in the most beautiful setting imaginable, on lake Genava surrounded by mountains. The prestigious Chillon Castle is one of Switzerland's well known symbols and the most visited historic monument in the country. This romantic castle was long of strategic importance in controlling trade in the Lake Geneva region. The dungeons inspired Lord Byron. Wonderful views can be enjoyed from many windows, guard towers, and the sentries walk.
Lavaux Vineyards:
Take a walk through some of the most beautiful scenery in Switzerland: the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces are criss-crossed with marked trails with stunning views over Lake Geneva and the Alps. Little trains on wheels help you up the incline so you can enjoy a walk at your own pace.
Now considered a site of universal value, Lavaux has been elevated to the status of world heritage site by UNESCO, its mosaic of vines welcoming many walkers seeking renewed vitality and tranquillity. All along the educational trail from Lausanne to Montreux, Lavaux vine-growers invite visitors to explore the exceptional and authentic beauty of their vineyards, whatever the season. Wine tourism breaks offer wine tastings and the chance to sample typical products in the vineyard wine cellars, the ideal complement to walks through the vines.
Vevey old town:
The old city of Vevey is dotted with historical monuments and museums bearing witness to its rich heritage. In addition, a large variety of boutiques and craftsmen can be found in the narrow paved streets, displaying their know-how and wares. The pedestrian zone of the old city, the lakeside, and the market (Tuesday and Saturday mornings) in the Grande Place, are well worth a browse. Via the Rue du Lac you come to the picturesque part of Vevey, intimate and pedestrians only: small narrow lanes, unexpected passageways, a host of craftsmen’s workshops, boutiques and bistros.
Montreux Lakeside:
Along the shores of Lake Geneva for almost seven kilometres, the flower-adorned banks of Montreux, between exotic flowers and palm trees, offer a sumptuous view of the mountain panorama. Taking advantage of the best part of the region’s micro climate, the city’s gardeners imbue the lake shore with colours and perfumes from the many types of exotic trees and flowers. The statue of Freddie Mercury also stands on the banks in front of the Covered Market. This artist, who lived for several years in Montreux recorded his last album, “Made in Heaven”, with the group Queen in the Mountain Studio, which is in the Montreux Casino.
