Design and Technology Interaction: Memory Cells Example

Abstract: Designing with advanced technologies is becoming a very challenging task because the basic MOS transistor is facing many limitations. Some alternatives start emerging at the academic as well as the industrial levels. These alternatives are SOI fully or partially depleted devices, doublegates and multigates devices, molecular devices etc. This talk addresses memory cells design based on these technologies and shows how we can take advantage of some new degrees of freedom to come up with new design ideas.

About the speaker: Prof. Amara AMARA obtained his HDR (Confirmation of Leading Research Capabilities) from Evry University, a Ph.D. in computer science in 1989 and a DEA (MSc) in 1984 in microelectronics and computer science, both from Paris VI University.

In 1988 he joined IBM research and development laboratory at Corbeil-Essonnes where he was involved in SRAM memory design with advanced CMOS technologies. From 1989 to 1992, he was assistant professor developing microelectronics academic programs for CEMIP (Microelectronic Center of Paris Iles-de-France) and took part actively to the European Research Project ESPRIT. In 1992, he joined ISEP (Paris Institute for Electronics) in charge of the microelectronics laboratory where he headed a team involved in High Speed GaAs VLSI circuit design. Since 1996, in addition to the management of the Electronics Department and more recently the Telecommunication Department, his research interests are mainly focusing on low power circuit design techniques and on design and technology interaction for advanced technologies (SOI, DGates FD SOI, Molecular Electronics etc...). In 1999, he did a sabbatical at Stanford University where he joined Professor De Micheli's group.

Amara has VP Membership of the French IEEE Section since January 2004. He was Chairman of the IEEE-CAS French Chapter and is currently counselor of the IEEE student branch at ISEP.

Among other activities, Amara is a member of the Board of Directors of "ISEP-Enterprises" Association, member of the CEMIP Executive Committee and the CEA Scientific Committee. He initiated and is General Chair of FTFC, a Low Voltage and Low Power Workshop held every two years in Paris. He is also a member of numerous Conference Technical Program Committees, and a member of the Editorial Board of MicroElectronics Journal and Co-Editor of "Annales des Télécommunication" (special issue on SoC for Telecommunication). He will chair ICICDT in 2008 in Grenoble and ISCAS 2010 in Paris.
