Abstract:

Low electric power design for electronic equipment is essential in our internet mobile life. We will carry a light and long life wearable terminal to communicate or interact with many people by using multimedia devices. Among several multimedia such as voice, audio, text, image and video, video is especially playing an important role in the communication for its visual and impressive characteristics.

This presentation will give a low electric power design for video processing. First, the foundation of low power design in electronic circuit is introduced and hardware or software issues are discussed to achieve low power design. Secondly, video processing technologies are discussed to send/receive or store/display huge video data through communication channel by compression or decompression methods. Thirdly, algorithm, architecture and circuit design methods are presented in detail to achieve low power video processing.

Several low power video chips have been developed by Multimedia Laboratories at Waseda University and have been presented at world top conferences such as ISSCC or VLSI Symposium. Technologies adopted in these chips are also described in this lecture as the effective examples.
